As virtual as it is unique, the Innogrape laboratory will enable some thirty French and Chinese research professors to share their knowledge and technologies on wine research. Stemming from a partnership between the national institute for agronomic research (INRA), the University of Bordeaux, Bordeaux Sciences Agro and the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing (CAS), Innogrape was unveiled at the end of September during a visit to China by INRA's CEO, Philippe Mauguin. Over a five-year period, the International Associate Laboratory (LIA) will focus on varietal creation and berry maturation mechanisms against a backdrop of climate change.

In terms of new grape varieties and rootstocks, ¡°the issue is about sharing our expertise to select vines that are resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses (downy mildew, powdery mildew, phylloxera, drought, extreme temperatures...). It is about identifying the best parents, obtaining hybrids through crossing, and making seeds germinate, for instance¡±, predicted Dr. Zhanwu Dai, research manager for the eco-physiology and functional genomics of vines at INRA Bordeaux.

Innogrape's annual budget is 40,000 euros (50/50 funded by the French and Chinese institutes). The research consortium also aims to secure access to international funds and grants.
