Recently,US renowned grape breeder, winemaker Tom Plocher and his work partner professor Alain visited China. Before coming to China, professor Tom wrote to me through email,¡±Why I have never seen rose wine in China. Why is that?¡± With this wonder,so today let¡¯s talk about Chinese rose wines.
Actually, now there are so many Chinese wineries that has rose wine production. In 2010,there was few.But in recent years, you can find more and more rose wines. On our last year¡¯s rose wine challenge in November,we received more than 40 wine samples. So there are at least 20 wineries with rose wine production.

The development of Chinese rose wine

On the fourth ¡°Colombin Cup¡±Yantai International Wine Competition we held in 2010,there are awarded rose wines among reds and whites. We were so excited because it¡¯s the first time. Two rose wines from Hebei Xiadu winery won silver medals.Xiadu is a winery that specialized in rose wine production. So it is a pioneer in the industry. The winery also drafted rose wine enterprise standards. Its production differentiation strategy turns out to be a great success.

Though the China fine wines challenge, rose wines gradually attracts people¡¯s attention. The rose wine challenge which held every year in November during Five Colors Coastal New Wine Festival has become a platform for Chinese rose wines. Many good quality rose wine brands get fame from this competition. Why we launched this competition that is to encourage Chinese wineries to try some new wine styles.

Surprise of US Professors

So this time we mainly selected Chinese rose wines for tasting. It¡¯s summer time, just the season to drink! There are rose wines from Ningxia ,Xinjiang, Hebei and Shandong,of different styles, from dry to sweet. Some are varietal wines ,some are blend wine. Varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon ,Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Cinsault. Of course, these are not the only grapes for Chinese rose wines. Some wineries try table grapes, like muscat, ruby seedless  ,and Longyan.

After we finished the tasting, all our faces turned pink,so lovely! What a great tasting!

Future of rose wine

We believe that with more and more wineries starting to make rose wine, market promotion and education, rose wine will have a bright future in China.Chinese wineries still have lots of work to do in improving its taste, studying its food pairing, and doing market promotion and education. We are looking forward its rise on the market!
