Wuwei Region in Gansu Province
This region is located in 101¡ã43¡ä£104¡ã43¡äE, 36¡ã46¡ä£38¡ã09¡äN, where distributed in Minqin county, Wuwei and the north part of Gulang county. Grape in this region is ripe enough, moderate sweet and acid, no plant diseases and insect pests, distinctive feature. This region is one of the best wine grape bases in China. The average temperature of growing season is close to Bordeaux, average temperature in July is 21.9¡æ, in September is 14.9¡æ, which is lower than 18¡æ in Bordeaux and benefit to keep the high acid.
Annual active accumulated temperature in Gulang county is 1209.5¡æ, 1363¡æin Wuwei and 1509¡æin Minqin. This area is coolest region and cool region of grape cultivation, fit for earliest-ripe varieties, early ripe varirties, middle-ripe varieties and late-ripe varieties. The climate in there is dry, enough sunshine, annual sunshine time as long as 2730£3030h, whole sun radiation reaches 134£138Kcal/cm2. The rainfall in this region is little, annual rainfall is lower than 200mm, evaporate higher than 2600£3100mm, irrigation is the main water supply, fewer plant diseases and insect pests than Bohai Bay region.
There are sandy soil in this region, rich in mineral, porous in soil structure, which benefits the growth of grape root. Temperature in there varies greatly, be fast in heat exchange, which benefits colour and mature. This region is fit for the viticulture of premium wine-grape. But organic compound is low , about 0.8£¥, PH is slightly high, about 8.Organic fertilizer and acid amelioration should be applied in vineyards.
Water supply in this region is convenient. Developed social economy, easy traffic and communication, abundant electric power of this area provide advantages for viticulture. Wuwei region got a great development in 1983, Huang Heyang farmland introduced 20 premier varieties, forming 20 thousand mu wine-grape basin, annual production of red wine is 5000 ton. Now Wuwei wine-grape basin is 81.2 thousand mu, annual production is 17.2thousand ton. The practice proved that terrior in This region can bring Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Riesling into full play.
